You don’t sound like you grew up in a Jim Crow South state and couldn’t figure it out. I didn’t either but in the northeast. But two people who lived in those states clearly knew what it meant and were speaking in a non-code to people in those states (it was code only to northerners like me). Those two people were Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton.
