Yes, I see you are from the UK, so there might not be an equivalent situation there. Many of the massacres for 35 years after our Civil War were done to by political organization by one party (the Democrats) to kill members of the other party (the civil rights Republicans in the 15 Southern states that the freed black Americans joined). There is a common misconception probably overseas but certainly in American that black Americans could not vote until 1965. That is not true. They were repressed and killed in groups but still registered and voted. By 1903 most of the 15 states had changed their state constitutions to almost eliminate the black American vote, from over one hundred thousand to less than 3,000 in states like Alabama and Louisiana. That left only one party in charge, then the Democrats, in the South, having eliminated democracy in practice (though many black Americans still legally fought it). It's all on the public records in newspapers and Congressional records. But it's ignored, since the one party killing the other for 35 years and changing constitutions would cause too much disruptions in the white majority. The appearance of unity became more important than protecting democracy and prosecuting unjust massacres.
