Silence, ignorance, and the ability to speak back against such “white mediation” wasn’t always the case. De-mediation was constant, or rather straightforward ideas. A rose was a rose. American Virginia started off challenging British Virginia an extraordinarily strong claim, one of the strongest cases that led to the founding of America. Today, because the dominant narrative machinery in our brain adheres so firmly to the principle of Unity, we can’t “see” it. That is, we can’t perceive, conceive, or imagine that one of the key areas the American Revolution sprang from was from slave owning elites in Virginia. Yet here we are taking a look at that foundation anyway, despite your brain.
Your brain “retrojects” the idea of Unity into the past, and Virginia is a land of slavery. Jefferson owned slaves in Virginia and so did Washington; therefore, no good came out of Virginia and these men were somehow “bad” because they owned slaves. Retrojection is taking the values you’ve been trained to memorize that are embedded within the history you’ve studied and experienced, which contains value structures in them.
