Very interesting. I wonder what happened in the Northern states after 1800. The southern states had laws that continued to show the distinction between freed men and enslaved men, but the northern states above the Mason-Dixon Line (north of Virginia mentioned here) had already abolished slavery as per the laws and state constitutions I’ve discovered. So could there have been no distinction?
