Trying to taint Whoopi as somehow being a racist is a bit of what happened here. She certainly understands the atrocity of the holocaust. Instead of canceling her, someone could have talked about how race is a construct and cultural context often decides how the dominant culture determines who is he “lesser” or “subhuman” race, especially when such labeling leads to a holocaust. In the case of Germany, it was the Jews labeled by Hitler and the white Germans; in the case of Bosnia, it was the Serbs labeling the Muslims during the 1990s genocide; during the case of Rwanda it was the case of the Hutus labeling and killing the Tutsi minority. In the case of China now the Uyghur genocide as labeled by the UN. In the US it was of course the whites labeling the blacks during the 89 years of “official” slavery in the US (1776-1865 officially, British rule before that). Crushing out this deeper discussion instigated by an honest question by a black woman by a presumably white run media company reflects poorly on them and not on Whoopi.
