Truman joined the Klan when young, but sought to change his mind. It was shameful though, as it was purely an indication that the South was split, looking at the electoral map, between Thurmond who took La., Ms. SC, and Al. and Truman who took the white segregationist votes of NC, Florida, Texas, Ark, Ok. Missouri, Va, Ky. In those states Truman won, the black Republicans had been disenfranchised by state constitutions from 1890-1910 (OK). They only won after that because they cheated, eliminating black Republicans from voting, making it near impossible for the remaining white civil rights Republicans to win. I wouldn’t call true, voted in by those “white’s only” whose legislative bodies disenfranchised 97 percent, or a million, black voters to win elections to be modern Democrats. They white Democratic legislators passed their state by state Jim Crow segregationist laws from 1870s to 1967. These were some of the worst “Democrats” during that time period. When Thurmond quit the Democratic Party after he rejoined it after the 1948 election, in mid-1964 he and America First MAGA confederate crew took over the Republican Party in those Jim Crow states, and then started changing that party nationally, transforming it from pro-civil rights to anti-civil rights, where they stand today. Truman was voted in my mild segregationists, not staunch ones, but that doesn’t make him a modern Democrat but a centrist Republican by today’s standards. The worst thing is labels and the false belief that the America First MAGA wing in the South have no agency, didn’t get angry, quit the Democratic Party and move into the Republican Party. They have tremendous agency. It’s the Democrats outside that region who don’t act strongly.
