This complicated passage of the bill and the history behind it is always re-investigating for me and the lessons it provides that you sum are import at to focus on: labels are not values and change over time. It’s those shift in values that have to be observed. As you say, the party of Trump is not entirely the Party of Bush. There isn’t even a little restraint and attempts at decency and honor, nor a desire to be or appear bipartisan, and he is very anti-civil rights.
The term Dixiecrat comes from the party Strum Thurmond created in 1948 when he ran for President when he was trying to lure his fellow Southern Democrats out of their party and into one more like Trump’s, more nakedly anti-civil rights. After the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act he quit the party and moved into the Republican Party in the South, taking many of the Southern Democrats with him, leaving that party to be filled ironically by black Americans, who they repressed. These were the very people they ran from. I agree that Jimmy Carter stayed and led the party with the black Americans towards greater peace, trying to heal the decades and decades long rift and damage that the Southern Democrats caused.
They warp perception, as it was Lincoln who hated this wing of the Democratic Party and was an abolitionist. He would agree today with AOC or Bernie, and none of his values are modern day GOP at all. The modern Republicans are simply trying to steal his pro-civil rights values because of the party label, Republican, even though underneath they are polar opposite in values. But people are fooled easily by labels as you suggest.
The Southern democrats had passed state constitutions that disfranchised black Republicans who were registered and voting starting in 1890 on a state by state basis. In Alabama over 97 percent of black registered Republicans were taken off voting rolls and disenfranchised in 1903 after passage for the new state constitution and the open plan the Southern Democrats in that state enacted to remove or insurrection the opposing party to prevent them from winning. 184,000 of the 187,000 registered black voters were removed from the 1900 rolls. That was an active overthrow of democracy I research and surprised to find the original documents.
These group doesn’t have intentions for democracy and recognizing civil rights of black Americans and foreigners and never has. The Southern “Dixiecrats” were Democrats from 1828-1964, crashed the Republican Party they disenfranchised, took over by nastiness, and now they are the Trump MAGA and taking over them. They’ve corrupted the northern and Western GOP party in the last fifty years the way they corrupted the Northern Democrat Party in the first one hundred and twenty years. They’ve stopped being the way they are, but we are just seeing it now under Trump in full form because the decent people northern wing have again surrendered to their relentless quest to crush civil rights for non-whites and women. Thanks again for your research and insights.
