There is free choice. The Census allows you to answer how you want. I believe Mixed race or Some Other Race. You can always answer what you want there. The 2020 Census had five minimum categories and two mandatory “subcategories” for ethnicity (Latino or non-Latino. Those are the “minimum” standards and not what exactly appeared, but it changes over time. You can answer your own questions your way on forms, or not at all. I like to use right black American and white, as a attempt to emphasize the Americanness of what MLK called “the negro” in 1960, and to de-emphasize the Americanness of whites. What I can’t understand is if so many white, far right wing ones especially, love to identify as European, why don’t they just go back there? MLK fought for this country—for equality and justice. They fight against it and seem to hate it here.
