The Puritans were actually radical "separatists" funded by a corporation to come to America. The ones who stayed behind continued to agitate politically and end up chopping of the head of the King in 1649 and taking over the country, ending the monarchy and autocracy for a decade. Hardly deserving of the term "Puritanical"--but that term, like this one, stuck.
