That’s a great way of handling their situation. I can think of two major differences in the outcomes. The police recently have been trained quite differently. They are trained that they should approach any situation like they are facing an enemy in a war zone. They are trained to draw their guns, essentially escalating the situation to a do or die choice. That’s why we see so many viral videos of cops drawing weapons for routine traffic stops. In fact, I just watched one yesterday of three cops surrounding a car at a gas station pointing their weapons at the black male driver. He had a temporary tag on the car he just bought. Which leads to big difference number two: unions. While most unions are attacked and weakened, the police unions are strengthened. The cop you described, Holt, while get a union lawyer, *if* it even came to that. He was the victim who was punched, off duty, and so the police won’t do anything. While you might be reprimanded or lose your job as a firefighter or a paramedic, nothing will happen got him. Even if Holt had been on the job, the union lawyers will protect him. Holt’s boss who disciplines him has the same lawyer and union protection after all.
