So true, though Hitler himself didn’t write or create the Final Solution. It was written in January 1942 by a group of high ranking officials and then implemented. It is somewhat a pervasive myth that concentration camps started out to kill Jews. They didn’t. They started out as “labor camps” or force labor to enslave ethnically “lower” people to force them to work to rebuild Germany and to do the “worst” jobs. Only after The Final Solution was draft did the labor camps turn into what we today think of as “concentration camps” were genocide took place. That’s why when you visit one of them today you might walk under an iron sign at the gates (I think Bergen-Belsen still has it) that says Arbeit Macht Frei or “work will make you free.”
