MLK Day and The Dirty Secret about the Civil Rights Movement

CNN map of redistricting in Texas for 2020
CNN map of the magic of redistricting in Texas for 2022 — more white districts, fewer white citizens [From CNN]

I was looking for a film to watch on this 2023 MLK day on Amazon and ran across this one, Slay the Dragon, group in with that category. It was made in 2020, presumably shot before the November election. The premise of the film is that the election was rigged. So that’s my point straight up front in a nutshell: the post-Civil Rights era is rigged against black Americans.

I know, it’s not much of a shocking realization, so I didn’t rent that documentary, because I know its outcome, is about the great grassroots movement to stop gerrymandering after the 2010 Census came out. Some young woman started a Facebook page about how the Republicans in particular were rigging the election results by carving up districts so they would win no matter what, despite a shrinking white demographic that consistently got smaller since they lost the popular vote in 2000 and ever since.

The outcome is that her grassroots movement lost. Of course. It’s 2023 and it hasn’t happened. In fact, the opposite was shown from the evidence in the picture above. Now full disclosure, I don’t know who funded her movement or the film, and it could truly have been grassroots, and she could be a true activist. The only reason I throw some skepticism or doubt on it is because, well, politics isn’t cheap and someone’s always behind it.
