Personally, my experiences, though a long time ago and dry few, are that rejection is vast, persistence is as necessary as it builds thicker and thicker skin, and the number of submissions has probably grown exponentially. The chance of even having been confident your story was read is small. But literally journals don’t provide outlets for experimentation and stick to “MFA voice” because it i reliable and safe providing a predictable voice that means constant sales and income for the publisher and editor. If your young, adhering to that style probably is not great. I suspect you would want to experiment with style, voice, themes, etc. That take time and won’t immediately provide a clear path to a career, fame, fortune, or, more importantly, a deeper sense of satisfaction from achievement of writing a meaningful piece of work in whatever genre you chose. You could start by something like Medium or other site, and then move into self-publishing on Amazon’s Vella. But something where you get some feedback probably is a best start.
Another item is that maybe you don’t want to write fiction but non-fiction, or memoir, or something else. Certainly if you like doing it, then don’t stop. Best of luck.
