Normally I like to focus on historical facts and ideas, and here there plenty of them, both laws and long term patterns. The most surprising pattern of facts is just pervasive the Census is in forcing a definition of white, constantly changing what is white, who and who isn’t white and when. I’ve been thinking for sometime about checking the box on any form asks for race “not applicable”, “does not apply to me”, “stop asking”, “I have no idea” or write in “human race”—which from a scientific biological perspective is the only real answer that is true and not based on what is a shifting definition by whites in congress who make the Census form. (Previously I guess I was “white”).
However, the more important idea is this abstract but necessary and powerful reminder that they will not cede power easily. The Insurrection of January 6th is just the shot across the bow. The demographic shift will continually pressure those white supremacists who have been using violence for hundreds of years, whether “officially” under slavery laws or by proxy via the klan or other forces during Jim Crow. This “new” era of Jim Crow isn’t new. It is just openly viewed more rawly because of Trump’s continual persistence of making loud derogatory remarks on ethnic differences, from Obama’s birther garbage White power will not gracefully cede power and all of its institution to the brown “rapists” on the border to naked hatred of China and Chinese. Trump and his insurrection will only act as a recruitment effort while the “Great Replacement” drives whites on the edge to go over it.
