Lines like this are so accurate I had to chuckle in a sad way. Like you don’t have to be white, “you just have to hate the right people.” It really hit the bullseye here. Although brevity is the sound of wit, the subject is grotesque and still shocks me. I’ve studied a lot of this but never saw the picture of Madison Square Garden where a 40 foot George Washington glows as a god from heaven between Nazi symbols. I was like, What?! The right wing has taken all the “sacred” American symbols of democracy and bent them to their will, forcing many to believe, wrongly, that American was founded as a right wing Christian nation. It was not. In fact, two of the first three groups banned (temporarily) from voting in some states in 1776 were Catholics and Quakers, both Christian (the other was, surprise, Jews). States decided independently and it wasn’t a national consensus.
What got me last or so was the picture of the Nazis marching on Washington, then have the police escort them into a U-Haul van afterwards and they drove away. Police escort. The opposite of BLM where it was police confrontation. Then, last week, I had to pinch myself when a heckler in DC made the news for mocking the Nazi rally in the center of DC again. It’s like an annual event.
Great history research and writing as usual. Thanks.
