It wasn’t exactly turning on a dime. It was a grueling process of defeat, where Americans firebombed such cities as Dresden using newly created incendiary bombing techniques from B-52 flying fortresses that leveled the city to the ground, killing by some estimates 1-200,000 Germans, man woman and child, young and old alike. The Soviets (Russians) were bombing and attacking from the east, razing cities to the ground, and by the time they reached Hitler, Berlin was pile of rubble. Eight million Germans were killed, meaning the one million German Jews and seven million soldiers and ordinary Germans. They were militarily and economically devastated and had little choice by to accept the conditions imposed by the Allies, four of who carved Germany up in zones and occupied those zones (French, British, US, Soviet). Then the two war trials displayed the full depravity of the jewish and other minority Holocaust, exposing the atrocity to the German population who remained. That atrocity was largely hidden from them, and they were severely embarrassed and disgraced openly on the world stage by the barbarity shown. The US represses it’s depravity by techniques like DeSantis, but almost all of it was gone anyway in the history books from the 1940 and 50s onward. It really is only the force of activists on the internet today like you and I and the author who are finding, learning and pushing new details out about those horrors of American slavery that is threatening the MAGA DeSantisians and Trumpians.
The Germans were shamed into change. Our supremacist party resisted such shame and change, fighting vehemently against it.
