I’m afraid it’s my grandfather’s fault. My father was born Newark, which was all white in the 1920 ad 30s. My grandfather was secretly one quarter black and got his law degree from Tulane in Louisiana but escaped to the north and his complexion under an Irish last name and a story he was part Spanish. It was just to dangerous to stay in New Orleans by then as it was illegal to be a quarter or eight negro after WWI. He became a judge and after World War Two he used his legal expertise to sell the first houses to black Americans in Newark. It was hard to sell due to the redlining laws, but not impossible if you were a lawyer. I like to think he was trying to do good and the right thing.
