If you want to know what Jesus ‘actually’ said, you probably won’y get any closer than the scholarly “The Essential Jesus” by John Dominic Crossan. He is a member of the Westar Institute, a collection of scholars who are mostly Christian though there is no sect affiliation. The point was to use several interlinear bibles, archeological and anthropological studies of historic times and several sources from the time period to strip away fact from fiction and get to the “essential” truth. (My later father was a theologian and professor who was a member but didn’t contribute and was well retired). It’s not a long book as it just contains historical sayings and brief explanations.
