I visited Dachau in the late 80s on a German class field trip. The salience inside the barbed wire provided an overwhelming sense of complicity and culpability. We should open a few similar things like that on ‘sacred grounds’, like a slave breeding camp on the site where black ‘studs’ were forced to impregnate black females to make new baby slaves to sell—over 70 existed by one account, though there are two ‘famous ones.’ That idea wrapped in the euphemism of ‘natural increase’ needs to be renamed into ‘forced breeding’.
Thanks for the comparison. America students should have the same guts to face the past that German students have. I didn’t see any crying Germans on my trips.
