I think this exactly right. I had just written my response before reading yours. But your phrase perhaps sums up what I needed a phrase for, “collective shame.” It is definitely absent and not felt as it is absent in the history books of who did what and why. The most I learned up North growing up white in Yankee territory was there used to be some “lynchings” but now they were over. It is a profound ignorance, especially since they have ended with the “Civil RIghts” movement and bills. Thank you for sharing this great insight.
