I think there might be four kinds of white people when it comes to racism (maybe five but not two).
1. One is whites shilling openly fight against systemic racism, that is speak out and/or take action.
2. The second is those who admit that systemic racism has existed, in the past and maybe now, and willing to at least engage in conversations, though they may not express personal racism against blacks and if so remember when they may have said a slur they regret.
3. The third are neutral and probably have not given it much and just go along to along. They probably include more women that men, by proportion. They won’t actively give an opinion when forced to, support passively who is standing next to them, tend to vote that way too, want to get on with their lives, may or may not know there is a system but have enough to do in life to just keep going, get out of bed, feed the kids and work, so it’s not a top priority.
4. The fourth are actively against admitting racism exists. These people are either explicitly racist, like supremacists, or superior in such a loud and obnoxious way that it’s pretty obvious they are racist to everyone but themselves. They do and will “slight” via dog whistle or make a slur against blacks and other races often, and certainly in private to other men. Women are a smaller proportion of this group but certainly many are in here. Or course, since they don’t believe racism exists, then they can’t be labeled as a racist by others or by themselves, like Trump. They could be members of a racist “brotherhood” or klan or other militia group. The strongest ones like Trump don’t need to be in a group to have their opinion reinforced, but do need the group admiration.
I believe the break down of these four categories is like this (full disclosure: I made up these numbers with absolutely no statistical proof or surveys what so ever): category 1) .3 percent; category 2) 4.7 percent; category 3) 70 percent; 4) 25 percent.
I’m depressed as a white man. Of course whites look racist with numbers like those. So how can we force change? And what would your percentage numbers of these categories be?
