I had not heard of this critical piece of the story, but I wish I could say I was surprised. The American mining company sold its Congo holdings last year to the Chinese and the use of child labor continues, despite denials. The Congolese government is trying to get more money and better conditions from the cobalt and lithium mines but I won't hold my breath. Over 15 million Congolese were killed in the biggest genocide of the twentieth century (by Leopold II of Belgium up until 1912), far more than killed by the atom bomb. The number of Somalis killed by hellfire missiles in 2020 was about 1000, mostly innocent men, women and children, to keep Americans safe. I barely feel any safer.
