I do think you make a good point. Two differences come to mind between her and Phelps. She did test positive and there is a 30 ban. He may have tested positive and got a thrifty ban, i don’t know, but he didn’t swim for 30 days after. His selection was far after. Secondly, 30 days may not be enough time to test negative and clear the drug out of her system. So perhaps they were afraid she would test positive just before the meet and they would have to pull her. So I don’t think it is just about race here. Having said that, they should have taken the chance and picked her. She would have got to travel to the games even if she tested positive at the games (they paring a back up runner anyway). She earned that spot, clearly. She trained her whole life for it. This would be a way as well to recognize her suffering and her mistake;, and show sympathy.
