I agree, there’s plenty of modern stories to mine, and I’m sick of constant Shakespeare “modern interpretations.” But Disney blew it with no real reinterpretation. Encanto has been my daughter’s watch list loop, and it is about an “all Hispanic” family. Disney could have made Snow White into a white man with a black princess coming to find him and “rescue” him. But both of these “dead” genres annoying focus on dictators (autocracy dressed up as a king, queen, beautiful princess). Our kids grow up in a democracy, and as we see in Russia, dictatorial/autocratic (or czarist) tendencies lead to destruction. Instead, “train” the kids not only with characters who look like them (i.e., diverse and women) but also in societies that look like theirs (i.e., democracies).
