Horrific story, but the outcome was expected. The justice system had been designed in Georgia not under the principles of constitutional equality, as other states in the North actually had been, but under the principles of inequality. In 1945, the segregationist laws only existed South of the Mason-Dixon Line (with the exception of 15 states west of the Mississippi that disallowed interracial marriage and a couple other items, but only sporadically). So the injustice that prevented a mixed jury, mixed schools, and black witnesses, all but designed the outcome before the white jury was called to the stand. In a way, the design made or reinforced the racism of the jurists, making it stronger perhaps in those who had it strongly in them and implanting it in those with only weak ties or coming from all white towns.
Thanks for this detailed and unique story.
