Great overview in an area where there isn’t a lot of public discussion and understanding. I’m reminded of a smaller original book and wonder if it’s been read, called The Selection and Breeding of Negro Slaves by Thomas Blackshear, who was a large slave owner, as was his mother (who inherited the farm and ran it after husband died) and his siblings with their own plantations. He moved to Texas from what I saw from Georgia. In this short book, he describes detailed breeding techniques and he developed them from horse-breeding techniques from the 18th century that were developed by science (or course plant cross breeding was going on for much longer). Black women were “experimented” with to produce “better” slaves for different tasks from a “stud”, and it could fetch better prices. And I recall reading an article on how gynecology came from the mid 1800s on experimenting on black women. It seems there is a long evolutionary process where forced breeding of slaves, not done in Europe, gave rise to this movement through practices. Wondering what you know or heard?
Thanks much.
