Oregon breaks free of its white supremacist past and prepares to get rich
So, what’s up with the white liberal in Oregon wanting to hold on to the state’s racists roots? (Full disclosure Oregon: the state came from a territory that did not allow black Americans to settle and then became a fully “whites only” state by law, until it was rescinded in 1925.) Now’s the time, nearly one hundred years after ending that anti-black law and entering fully into American ideals of officially respecting each individual’s inalienable rights, instead of just whites, to celebrate your American roots at being almost 100 years a real American state and not just a segregationist paradise for supremacy.
States in the South didn’t have it so easy after the Civil War like you did Oregon. They had to work and work to segregate black American voters and repress them. Many of those 15 states had to make constitutional requirements based “literacy tests”, grandfather clauses, poll taxes and other fake tests to use against black Americans. The white rulers had to face legal challenges and keep the North out. What did you do Oregon? Nothing, you got a free ride with no black Americans to repress since you took care of it in the beginning, and kept all black Americans out — no laws, no challenges and threats, no need to lynch and murder like in the post-Civil War South. That was a lot of work.
