After reading the actual transcripts from the trial of two elected officials in the 18 North Carolina election and the trial, five of them testified under oath separately that the founder or the leader was President Johnson. If he didn’t directly start it, he looked like the central spreader of it and was called the Head Sun and other trials. The opposition was so angry at Governor Holden for putting on the trial that convicted the klan members they impeached him, making him the first impeached Governor. According to one witness in the hundreds pages of trial notes and transcripts of the Alamance county investigation and criminal trial done under the authority of the governor and President Ulysses:

WITNESS [John Long]. “No, sir. I understood there were forty or fifty thousand [Klansmen] in the State, and a considerable number in Tennessee, and that Andrew Johnson was the founder.”
