Token Case or Start of Reform?
Here was a semi-historic moment we thought wouldn’t come: the attack on the cops who killed Breonna Taylor. The black American woman who read these cops their rights (effectively) carried a well-deserved smug look of excellence. Assistant Attorney General Clark in Charge of the Civil Rights Division, and perhaps the best qualified candidate in education and experience the position ever saw, made me shocked and proud. She came out swinging. This felt like the first blast against the corrupt system of cops that has been getting away with murder of black Americans since, well, since the Civil War ended, and order and decency was attempted to be imposed in the South but wasn’t.
You can be sure of one thing: You cannot rely on white politicians to enforce democracy. Even the adamant white males like Schumer, Schiff and Swalwell lack sufficient anger. They can get indignant about Trump, but the deeper systemic racism he represents, not so much. They seem more embarrassed by Trump and want him behind them rather than deal with the resurfaced truth of violent racists cops plaguing the US since the sheriff’s badge was invented for slave patrols.
Tolerance of racist symbolism and practices by politicians is racism. Until 2020, the Mississippi flag contained the swastika. Living under that symbol of absolutist supremacy is an outrage, an…
