Another historically rich piece of unknown history for me at least. I head heard that George married up, and that he married Martha, not ‘the other woman’ he wrote and pursued, because Martha was rich and her father owned a lot of slaves. In other words, the title of the slaves were Martha’s to inherit, and that is where the ‘wealth’ was, along with the inheritance of land. George by comparison owned 9 slaves and those are the ones he freed in to New Jersey, which had abolished slavery. Not that these stories makes him morally “better”, but I had a couple of them and found it interesting that a woman could own and control the slaves and wealth and the man marry up for position and social status. Not totally surprising as it happened, but just an unexplored piece of history as we tend to make assumptions that men owned everything and men controlled everything. It made me think we project this developed idea called “trad wife” backwards into a time when it didn’t exist and perhaps that covers up some storylines or facts. Just thinking outloud. Thanks again.

Could you mean April 1775 instead of 1765?
