All that’s true about Lee. I’m not negating his lifetime accomplishments and only noting history’s relativistic description of winners and losers in a war. From the perspective of the North that won, which is America, he was a traitor; from the perspective of the South, a hero who lost the revolution. But we do there there were only two presidents of the first fourteen who did NOT own slaves and both were named Adams (father and son). They were morally against it and rightly so. Europe was against slavery and it is against the foundation of American principles of equality and justice for all. Democracy cannot exist with them.
