After 1841, when the Americans invaded California (I’m supposed to say “settled” so apologies), they kicked out the “Mexicans” who had been living there. Then in 1934 the American government deported about one million “Mexicans.” There was no irony that perhaps up to 80 percent (I’ve seen a low of 20 and high of 80) were born there and were American citizens. Then the government wiped that incident from our collective consciousness and you and everyone forgot all about it. See, no problem. Apathy and historical amnesia are the white man’s disease.
