The New Unbalanced American Narrative

[Part of the White Media Analysis Series — Northern Narrative Blindness — Part 4 of 4]

In short, John is wrong. Don’t believe him or buy into his argument. You will see it repeatedly. He’s not a Lone Wolf in the media. He is only one representation of this white media, the northern narrative.

I have used his segment because I find it to be an “ideal” one of the underlying thought structures in the northern media narrative. (“Researcher sees “dangerous” and significant shift in right-wing militia group.” Segment on CNN) And because it talks about the most relevant topic to that narrative: extremism in the age of Trump.

The structural mechanisms of mainstream media are mostly subconsciously propagated, springing from these narrative principles. Though they have direct conscious input from corporations controlling them, they naturally act out of a northern need to appear fair and balanced. After the Civil War, the North wanted to paper over differences, account for the violence if it arose, but generally “Move On” to the business of the day.

Legally, they are sometimes forced to give each side, each political party, the same amount of time during elections. The fact we have a two-party system dominating our country only exacerbates this mental construct of two equal sides. This structural mechanism for you as a viewer to “create balance” and maintain it is born out of a desire to remain reasonable. It is an idea you must buy into when…
